New! Italy Sketchbook Tour with Paul Jackson - Sept. 8-18, 2012 ::: Details here!

Materials list below

Workshop Kudos

"Thank you for a wonderful weekend! Fortunately, it lived up to my expectations. I say that because I probably had placed too much anticipation on repeating last year's fun, learning, and camaraderie. I never should have doubted your ability to deliver another educational, inspirational, and fun workshop. If there ever was a chance of having too much fun, you guys embody it. And, of course, it goes without saying that everyone left with greater confidence in their ability to improve their future paintings.

"Having an original 'Paul Jackson' painted before my eyes is special. I can assure you, it will occupy a highly visible place of honor in our great room. As a matter of fact, I suspect that one of my paintings will come down to make room for it. Ironically, it's the one I painted last year at your workshop. How fitting is that! Your painting will not only provide a sense of beauty but also a reminder of how much fun and enjoyment we have together."

Best always, affectionately,

Howard
Baton Rouge, LA

"A terrific three days! relaxed atmosphere, yet hard work that seemed to delight everyone. Amazing demos that had me mesmerized as Paul pulled and pushed color in ways I have never seen. He and Marla make everyone feel like they are old friends gathering to have fun! Thanks you two!"

- Victoria Lenne
Knoxville, Tennessee

"As an amateur artist but a professional in the teaching field, I cannot say enough about the quality of Paul's workshop! He is that rare professional artist who not only makes his work come alive, but knows how to generously share his techniques in ways so that others can, too. I will never be a Paul Jackson, but he certainly helped me become the best ME, I could, in three fun and informative days.

"It really was a pleasure getting to know you two, and I look forward to June and seeing you again (yikes! I may be becoming a Paul groupie!)"

- Carol Hemmye
Pensacola, Florida

"At first, the thought of taking a workshop with Paul Jackson was intimidating to me -- he is such an incredible artist and has won so many awards. But after going on his sketchbook tour of Italy, I could see how passionate he is about watercolor and how thrilled he is to ignite that passion in others -- especially new artists. He not only is incredibly encouraging, he also is effective in pointing out what you can do differently to make your painting better. I was thrilled with my results of the workshop and very motivated to paint paint paint! Paul does more than teach the technical aspects of painting, he teaches you how to really see your subject, especially the light and shadows and translate those into values. He also gave great pointers on composition and perspective. But best of all, he just made it really fun. Paul has a terrific sense of humor and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the three full days of the class. I also have to give him kudos on how well organized the class was - plenty of space for each participant and extra supplies available. I have taken several workshops and Paul's was the best by far!"

Workshop Details

Reach the next level of artistic confidence and ability as Paul helps you explore design, color, value, textures and patterns. Through informal lectures, discussions, demonstrations and critiques you will be guided in refining your personal painting style. Come prepared to find logical and creative answers to your watercolor problems.

Paul will demonstrate the versatility of watercolor paint. You will learn how to mix colors using a limited palette and how to work in thin layers of washes to build up luminous colors. Paul will lead you step-by-step with illustrations of the painting process. Emphasis will be on what makes a good painting, planning the entire picture area, the importance of thinking through the composition, good division of shapes, value planning, what to communicate about the subject, and how to correct mistakes.

If watermedia is your passion, then this highly energized painting workshop is for you! Paul's stress-free, positive approach toward the act of painting will inspire you to loosen up and have fun again. Expect an intense, concentrated and lively workshop where you will elevate your understanding of how watercolor can be controlled.

Paul is the author of Painting Spectacular Light Effects in Watercolor. His work has been often featured in the International Artist and The Artist’s Magazine. He is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society.

Materials List:

  • Paper - 1 sheet of Arches watercolor paper, 260lb cold press, (I'll demonstrate on 1/2 sheet -20x26”)
